Gran Canaria Holiday With My Partner: Gay Bars, Drag Shows, Beaches and Sunshine
Gran Canaria has long been one of Europe’s most popular destinations for LGBTQ+ travellers, and my holiday there with my partner in 2010 remains a colourful and memorable experience. With its golden beaches, welcoming gay bars, energetic clubs, entertaining drag scene and glorious year-round sunshine, the island offered everything we wanted from a relaxing and fun-filled escape.
We travelled to Gran Canaria ready to leave everyday life behind and enjoy some much-needed time together. It was a chance to relax by the pool, explore the local nightlife, eat at different restaurants and discover why the island had developed such a strong reputation among gay holidaymakers.
Although Gran Canaria has continued to change since 2010, the memories of that holiday still stand out. It was warm, lively, friendly and full of personality. From afternoons beside the swimming pool to nights spent watching drag performances, every day offered something different.
Arriving in Gran Canaria
The first thing we noticed when we arrived was the wonderful climate. Stepping into the sunshine instantly made the journey worthwhile. Gran Canaria felt bright, warm and inviting, with palm trees, clear skies and a relaxed atmosphere that immediately put us into holiday mode.
We were excited to reach our accommodation, unpack our bags and begin exploring. Our holiday complex had many of the facilities we wanted, including a swimming pool and Jacuzzi. These became an important part of our daily routine, especially when we wanted a peaceful morning or afternoon before heading out for dinner and drinks.

The atmosphere around the resort was social but never overwhelming. Other guests were enjoying their own holidays, reading beside the pool, chatting over drinks or cooling off in the water. It created a friendly environment where everyone seemed happy to slow down and enjoy the sunshine.
Relaxing Beside the Swimming Pool
Some of the simplest moments from our Gran Canaria holiday were also among the most enjoyable. Spending time beside the swimming pool gave us the opportunity to relax properly, without worrying about work, household responsibilities or everyday commitments.
We would find a comfortable place, apply plenty of sun cream and settle down for a few hours. When the heat became too much, we could jump into the pool for a refreshing swim. The water offered welcome relief from the strong sunshine and made it easy to spend most of the day outdoors.
Pool days were never completely uneventful. There was always something happening around us, whether it was music playing, people laughing or guests discussing their plans for the evening. We could enjoy the social atmosphere while still having our own space as a couple.
A cold drink beside the pool felt like a small luxury. We could sit together, talk about the night before and decide where we wanted to go next. Holidays can sometimes become too focused on seeing and doing everything, but Gran Canaria encouraged us to take our time.
Those relaxing afternoons gave us the energy to make the most of the island’s nightlife. After spending a few peaceful hours in the sunshine, we would return to our room, shower, choose what to wear and prepare for another evening out.
Enjoying the Jacuzzi
The Jacuzzi added another level of relaxation to our stay. After swimming, sunbathing or walking around the local area, it was wonderful to sit in the bubbling water and let ourselves unwind.
It became a place where we could pause and appreciate being away together. We did not have to think about where we needed to be next. We could enjoy the warmth, talk and watch the world around us.

Discovering the Beaches of Gran Canaria
No Gran Canaria holiday would be complete without visiting its beautiful beaches. The island is known for its varied coastline, ranging from lively tourist beaches to quieter stretches of sand and dramatic natural landscapes.
Maspalomas is one of the island’s most recognisable destinations. Its vast sand dunes create an impressive landscape that can feel almost separate from the nearby hotels, restaurants and holiday resorts. Walking around the dunes and coastline gave us an opportunity to experience a more natural side of Gran Canaria.
The beach offered plenty of space to relax, enjoy the sunshine and watch the waves. The warm weather made it tempting to stay for hours, although carrying water and using a high-factor sun cream were essential.
Playa del Inglés was another important part of the holiday experience. Its long sandy beach attracted visitors from around the world and had a lively atmosphere. It was easy to combine time by the sea with a visit to nearby cafés, bars or shops.
Gran Canaria’s beaches gave us a welcome contrast to the nightlife. During the evening, we could be surrounded by music, colourful lights and busy venues. During the day, we could listen to the sea and enjoy the open space. That mixture helped make the holiday feel complete.
Eating at Local Restaurants
Dining out was one of the highlights of travelling with my partner. Gran Canaria offered an enormous variety of places to eat, from relaxed cafés and casual holiday restaurants to venues suited to a more romantic evening.
We enjoyed choosing somewhere different and sitting down together after a day in the sun. Eating outside in the warm evening air made even a simple meal feel special. There was no washing up to think about and nowhere we needed to rush off to.
The tourist areas offered a wide selection of international food, making it easy to find familiar favourites. We could choose from British dishes, Italian meals, grilled meats, burgers, seafood and many other options. There was something for almost every taste and budget.
Trying Spanish and Canarian food also added to the experience. Local dishes often featured fresh seafood, meat, vegetables and the famous Canarian potatoes served with mojo sauce. These small, wrinkled potatoes are cooked in salted water and traditionally accompanied by flavourful red or green sauces.
Restaurants were not simply places to eat. They were where we planned our evenings, talked about our favourite moments and enjoyed being away together. A leisurely meal provided a natural bridge between a relaxed day and a lively night.
The welcoming service we experienced helped us feel comfortable as a couple. Gran Canaria was already well established as an LGBTQ+-friendly destination, particularly around Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas. Being able to sit together, enjoy dinner and openly share our holiday without feeling out of place mattered.
The Yumbo Centre and Gay Nightlife
For many LGBTQ+ visitors, the Yumbo Centre is at the heart of gay nightlife in Gran Canaria. By day, it functions as a shopping and leisure centre. At night, it transforms into a colourful collection of gay bars, clubs, terraces, cafés and entertainment venues.
Visiting the Yumbo Centre with my partner was an essential part of our holiday. The atmosphere was energetic, diverse and exciting. Different venues offered their own style of music, drinks and entertainment, meaning we could move between bars and create a different night every time.
Some places were relaxed and suitable for sitting with a drink, chatting and watching people pass by. Others were much louder, with dance music, flashing lights and packed dance floors. Whether we wanted a quiet start to the evening or a late night of dancing, there was somewhere that suited our mood.
The variety of people made the experience particularly enjoyable. Couples, groups of friends, local residents and international visitors all mixed together. We met people who were visiting for the first time and others who returned to Gran Canaria year after year.
There was a sense that people could relax and express themselves. Clothing, personalities and ages varied enormously, but that diversity was part of the appeal. The nightlife did not feel as though it was designed for only one type of gay traveller.
Exploring the Gay Bars
The gay bars were among the most memorable parts of our 2010 holiday. Some were busy and energetic, while others offered a calmer environment where we could sit together and enjoy a drink.
We often began the night at a terrace bar. This allowed us to settle into the evening, listen to music and watch the Yumbo Centre gradually become busier. As the night continued, we could decide whether to stay, move to another venue or find somewhere to dance.
Each bar had its own personality. Some played popular chart music, while others focused on dance classics or camp favourites. The choice meant that we were never limited to a single style of night out.
The friendly and open atmosphere helped make the holiday special. We could walk into a gay venue as a couple and feel welcome. There was no need to explain ourselves or wonder whether we would be accepted. That feeling of belonging is one of the reasons Gran Canaria has remained such a significant LGBTQ+ destination.
Drinks, music and lively crowds were certainly part of the appeal, but the strongest memories came from the overall sense of freedom. We were able to enjoy our relationship in a place where LGBTQ+ visibility was normal and celebrated.
Gran Canaria’s Drag Scene
Gran Canaria’s drag scene brought glamour, comedy, music and larger-than-life personalities to our evenings. Watching a drag show was not simply a side activity; it was a full entertainment experience.
The performers combined elaborate costumes, dramatic makeup, comedy, dancing and lip-sync performances. They knew how to work with the audience and keep the room engaged. Some acts were glamorous and polished, while others were deliberately outrageous and hilarious.
We enjoyed the unpredictability of the shows. Audience participation could make anyone sitting near the front part of the performance, so there was always a mixture of excitement and nervous laughter. The best drag artists could make the entire venue feel involved.
The drag scene also represented something important about LGBTQ+ culture. It celebrated creativity, confidence and the freedom to challenge expectations. In an already vibrant destination, the performers added even more colour.
Seeing drag live with my partner created some of our funniest holiday memories. The performances gave us plenty to talk about afterwards, from the costumes and songs to the jokes and reactions from the audience.
Dancing in the Clubs
After visiting the bars and watching a show, the clubs offered the perfect way to continue the night. Gran Canaria’s gay club scene was energetic, welcoming and suited to anyone who wanted to stay out until the early hours.
The music ranged from commercial pop and familiar anthems to house and electronic dance tracks. A busy dance floor created a brilliant atmosphere, especially once everyone had relaxed and the night was fully underway.
Dancing with my partner felt carefree. We could enjoy the music, laugh and completely forget about the time. That freedom is one of the things I remember most clearly about the holiday.
Late nights were followed by slow mornings, which was exactly how we wanted it. There was no pressure to get up early. We could sleep, recover beside the pool, use the Jacuzzi and prepare to do it all again.
A Welcoming Destination for Gay Couples
Gran Canaria’s popularity among gay travellers is not based solely on its bars and clubs. The destination offers something more meaningful: the opportunity to feel visible and comfortable.
Travelling as a same-sex couple can involve thinking about how openly affectionate it is safe to be or how staff and other guests might react. In Gran Canaria’s established LGBTQ+ areas, we generally felt able to relax and enjoy the same ordinary holiday moments as any other couple.
That sense of acceptance enhanced every part of our trip. It made dining out more comfortable, nightlife more enjoyable and simply walking around together feel easier.
LGBTQ+ travel is not only about finding gay venues. It is also about discovering destinations where people can feel at ease. Gran Canaria offered a combination of dedicated gay spaces and a wider tourism culture that welcomed visitors from many backgrounds.
Looking Back at Our 2010 Holiday
When I think about our Gran Canaria holiday in 2010, I remember the contrast between relaxation and excitement. One moment we were sitting beside the swimming pool or unwinding in the Jacuzzi; the next, we were watching a drag performance or dancing in a busy gay club.
I remember the restaurants, warm evenings, sunny beaches and colourful nightlife. Most importantly, I remember sharing the experience with my partner.
Holidays provide a break from routine, but they can also strengthen a relationship. They create uninterrupted time to talk, laugh, explore and make memories together. Gran Canaria gave us the space to do all of those things.
The island offered everything we wanted: sunshine, beaches, swimming, food, entertainment and LGBTQ+-friendly nightlife. It was lively when we wanted excitement and peaceful when we needed to recharge.

Couples can design a holiday that suits them. It can be romantic, energetic, relaxing or a combination of all three. Days can be spent by the pool, in the Jacuzzi or beside the sea, while evenings can include dinner, drinks, drag shows and dancing.
